Uterine Cancer

This hysterectomy specimen has already been opened to reveal an extensive endometrial adenocarcinoma. These malignancies arise from the inner lining of the uterus, the endometrium, and can be seen as the “rough-up” reddish areas in the center of the uterus. This cancer has invaded deeply into the muscle (myometrium) of the uterus (DI). Even if this is a low grade malignancy with no evidence of extra-uterine metastases the risk of local pelvic recurrence is significant unless post-operative radiation therapy is recommended.
