Surgical-Procedure.jpg (5284 bytes) Almost all gynecologic cancers will require surgery as part of the overall treatment plan.  The physicians of Gynecologic Oncology Associates (GOA) are board certified Gynecologic Oncologists who specialize in the  performance of surgical procedures necessary for treatment of  pelvic malignancies and unusual or difficult non-cancer related conditions. Surgery can range from relatively simple, outpatient diagnostic procedures to a variety of extremely complex techniques required to effectively treat pelvic malignancies.

The most common outpatient procedures performed by Gynecologic Oncologists include biopsies of the lower genital tract, uterine dilatation and curettage, insertion of chemotherapy infusion ports, staging examinations and laparoscopic removal of pelvic tumors.  These type of surgeries require minimal preparation and allow rapid return to your normal routine.

Extensive abdominal and pelvic surgeries are often needed to optimize the likelihood of cure of a gynecologic malignancy.  If this is the case in your situation you will undergo extensive pre-surgical instruction and counseling by GOA physicians and nurses.  Before any surgery is performed you will have exhaustive knowledge of all aspects of the procedure.

Preparation for these surgeries will usually require evacuation of bowel contents (bowel prep), X-rays, cardiogram and blood tests.    You will be able to designate family members or friends to donate blood should transfusion be anticipated.  The latest in auto-transfusion techniques are also employed.

Your surgery is performed by a team of GOA physicians, board certified Anesthesiologists and experienced operating room Nurses.  Your comfort and safety is paramount to all members of the operating team.

To a great extent, your postoperative course is dependent on the type of surgery performed.  After most outpatient procedures you will experience very little discomfort and will probably be able to return to your normal activities within days.  Major surgeries require a hospital stay ranging from several days to weeks.   The input of many support services is utilized to assure an uncomplicated and worry-free post-operative course.
