This is a radical hysterectomy
specimen from a patient with a small volume Stage IB squamous carcinoma
of the cervix. The pale tissue in this photograph is the cervix and
a margin of vagina. The cancer is the "reddish" area at
the tip of the cervix. This cancer is infiltrating into the substance
of the cervix and not presenting as a "mass" or "tumor".
The majority of patients with very early cancers of the cervix are adequately
treated with this surgical procedure alone. Occasionally radiation
treatment must be delivered to the pelvis after surgery in order to optimize
the likelihood of cure. |
