Ovarian cancer is often difficult to diagnose with certainty pre-operatively.
This photograph illustrates a not uncommon reason for this difficulty. This
patient underwent a hysterectomy and bilateral salpingoophorectomy for "enlarging
fibroids". The uterus does, in fact,, contain a large leiomyoma projecting
from the fundus (the white mass at the top of the picture). The right ovary
was also found to be completely replaced with a grade 3 adenocarcinoma (the
mass on the left of the photograph). |
